New free mapping program
Applications, GPS, N95 July 23rd, 2007Hello,
I found this site from somewhere (sorry I can not exactly remember where) for a free GPS mapping program that includes voice navigation.
I have it installed on my phone and seems to work well. I even navigated to my parents house which is out the back of Wauchope.
I have not done much testing on it yet.
Give it a go. It is free.

I’ve actually had this listed on the N95 Links tab at the top of this page. But this is worth showing off here once again. Free and includes voice nav, so its’ worth a look by those that needs this type of feature.

2 questions regarding this software.
Does it use the N95′s internal GPS reciever?
Can you download all the maps in one go through the PC to minimise data costs when out and about/
Cheers,

Hello,
The answers to your questions are
1. It does use the internal gps receiver. Ieven acheived a lock inside the house, something that the Nokia Maps failed to acheive.
2. You can download the install file onto the pc. I still have the file on my pc…

Tested, and is great, but it doesn’t allow us to preload the google earth map and photo on to phone.

The constant GPRS data stop costs can be daunting for some, if not most, users. I am testing this app using my wifi connection and it does require data map updates to continue plotting the route or just browsing in general. Nice app tho, even if I wont ever take it outside the range of my wifi (^.-)\

Admin: Does these mapping program suppose to use phone internet to run? or is it like the car navigation systems. This months optus bill was a big one because Optus said my N95 uses optus via internet to navigate around. Is this true?

To be honest I don’t know the answer to your question.
For normal GPS navigation using the provided MAPs program, you can happily turn off the requirement for it to use the internet and you won’t be charged anything. For the amazegps I have no idea. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on how it operates?

Admin: Thank you for that advice. Just to make sure, Do you go to options, network, down to use network, change to “never” . Is that like your phone settings now? thanks

amazegps does a constant stream of downloading if you use the moving maps. If you go to the site there is a little link on the right side that says something about “Learn how to save money while using amazegps” or something to that effect. It explains it pretty well there.

I have amAze on my n95 and yes it does need to connect to the net when you are using it. the amAze website say that they have no intention of making the maps available to download to your phone as the program is advertiser supported. Ads pop up when in gps range of paying advertiser. Maps downloaded to phones will not enable amAze to update advertiser ads until you update maps stored on the phone. I am in Sydney at the moment and have not seen any advertisements when using amAze. To minimise download charges you can turn off the map and just have arrows and voice navigation instead of the live moving map.

Hi there, yeah same problem, even more so because I was on prepaid! But after some swithing on an off various networks finally sorted it out but it did cost me via trial an error! Basically guided GPS with voice will cost you, however it will navigate you without the screen orientating for you and follow your course-this if for free and still v usefull, however I was even being charged for this originally! So here’s what I did.
1.Maps, Settings, Network, Use Network – Select Never.
2.Tools, Settings, General, Positioning, Positioning methods – Select Intergrated GPS only (ie Tick)
For me I can now Navigate (without voice and arrows) and no charge. The intergrated GPS is now the phone acting as a GPS unit and not ripping info from any towers. It may be slower in first start up, ie receiving first Satellite lock, but once est. works fine – even had it going inside. Hope this helps. J

did everything it was advertised to do.
it’s not 100%, but it’s real close.
mounts on the windshield easily. bright display that even has a night mode. pleasant voice directions.
wide screen is the way to go.
it knows everything. (restaurants, hotels, etc)
may never look at a map again.
