V12 N95 Firmware now available
Firmware, N95 July 9th, 2007Before you race off to install the new firmware be sure to back up all important data on your phone. This could include GPS data as well. There are some reports that the maps need to be reloaded after a firmware update.
A few people have reported that the Nokia software updater (NSU) now lists V12 firmware for the N95.
Not too sure on the list of improvements at this stage, so if you have any info feel free to attach a comment to this article.
After successful firmware update the details are:
V 12.0.013
19-06-07
RM-159
Nokia N95 (13.01)
A lot of people asking if this is available for 3 – N95′s here in Australia. The short answer is no.

July 9th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
hi ichigo! Try to reinstall ( or update) your nokia software updater. This will solve your internal module error.

mine worked great from PC suite, is there a list of what improvements are in this version anywhere?
July 10th, 2007 at 8:08 am
Well, I tried to reinstall the nokia software updater, but the program said: ” This program has already been installed. And then i selected: repair. And this worked, and i was able to update my n95. Hope this works

I’ve just run the upgrade on my Vodafone UK branded phone. Here are the steps I took:
– remove memory card
– backup phone with nokia content copier
– follow steps at http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm to debrand the phone and set to product code 0536062 (make a note of the existing product code)
– run nokia updater and update the phone firmware to v12
– rebrand the phone with the original product code
– restore the stuff you backed up earlier – I was able to re-install everything except “settings” which bricked the phone
– manually re-install apps and re-configure
Done!
If you end up with the dreaded “Phone failed to startup, contact retailer” message then do the following:
– Turn off the phone
– hold down 3, * and the green call button
– still holding them down push the power button
– keep holding them down and allow the phone to boot
You should be OK now. I got the message when I tried restoring the settings from my previous backup to the phone.

Hey all,
I’m with 3 in Australia, and have upgraded to this version. I had to change the product code with nemesis service suite (used euro code), then did the firmware update as normal, all works. As a bonus, I now don’t have any of 3′s muck on there. All the network access works fine after update, can still make/take calls, use the phone as a bluetooth broadband modem (love the speed
), and the assisted gps ROCKS!! massively quick locks, can even lock indoors now.
Cheers -smb

Anothing I found was that the USB transfer speed (through a Mass Storage connection) seemed to have increased 10-folds! Transferring just a little less than half of the Nokia maps files took 14 minutes as opposed to 4 hours…
July 11th, 2007 at 1:06 am
mine sucessfully installed first go… phone froze twice afterwards within the following hours but since then its been faster, less navigation and less speaker problems also…
my ONLY problem since update… i use the phone for 12-16hours straight… charge it fully prior to going to sleep… wakeup 6 hours later and phone is switched off and completely flat… no apps are running or anything… its like my phone only drains itself whilst im sleeping…
im going to stay up tonite to watch it all nite long and wait for it to replicate this problem… unless it only does it behind my back – sneaky n95!

Mr roller as you said you’r with 3′aus right when you did update firmware and you got the code back to original?.And the main question is all the content of 3 are gone but CAN YOU STILL ACCESS YOUR 3 ACCOUNT BY USING THE PHONE(I MEAN MY 3)Thank you I need to know this coz I have to keep checking my balance on call
July 11th, 2007 at 8:35 am
Assisted GPS is great but remember that it’ll be making small data requests (mine typically look like 1kB up and 5kB down) each time it contacts the position server.
Obviously it depends on your network provider’s data rate and how much you use it but the price could add up.
July 11th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
Issay,
Yep, you can still access my3. There won’t be an icon for it anymore, but after the update the three web pages are still in the bookmarks folder (i’m not sure how they do that, whether they were loaded from sim, or ota, or what.. anyone?), so just start the browser, then on the first screen that comes up (bookmarks) scroll down to ‘my3′ and you are away. I’ve tried it and works great.
v12 is SOOOO worth it! It is generally quicker, and i’m getting an average fix time of about 10 seconds
Jimbo raises a good point above about agps tho. I’m on xseries 20 extra bucks a month for 500 megs (which is actually heaps when the phone uses wifi most of the time), so 5 kb to get a lock is nothing. For anyones info, if you call 3, they can tack this onto their plan without any contract, it is well worth it for the n95. (also comes in 30 for 1 gig, 40 for 2 gig)
Also, does anyone here still have v11? I went to use the voice recorder app the other day, and i can record notes up to an hour long, wasn’t the old one limited to 1 minute? Can’t remember..
July 12th, 2007 at 9:04 am
Mr Roller,
Im on 3 Aus as well. wondering if i need to get 3 to unlock my phone b4 i can update to v12? right now the nokia software updater says my v11 is the current version.
thx

I’m on 3 Australia, with an unlocked, debranded phone and this update works without any problems. When you first start the phone on the new firmware it runs you through a setup wizard that looks for operator settings where I assume it gets all the 3 bookmarks, planet3 settings, etc.
Also noticed when you download something from the Internet it has a better display of the progress with % and amount.
This update seems to have fixed the recurring alarm/Multimedia key problem!
July 12th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
hi, newbie question here. Is debranding and unlocking the same thing? if not, what is debranding?
July 13th, 2007 at 3:02 am
Mike,
I didn’t unlock mine, i just changed the prod code with nemesis service suite, then the software updater recognised the newer version available.
July 14th, 2007 at 2:39 am
newb: debranding guide found here http://myn95.com/?p=42
You have to contact 3 Australia’s customer care to unlock your phone.

I bought my n95 and tried to update the firmware to the latest version as there was updates available. But then the application just wouldn’t update my mobile. It has definitely downloaded the entire file (100+ MB) update. But then it tries to update mobile and gives out a “phone recovery” information (only nokia logo comes up on the screen upto this point). Anyone have such issues?
July 19th, 2007 at 1:01 am
just a quick one:
i did change my vodafone branded N95′s product code and was able to update to the latest firmware 12.x.
the advantages?
- my N95 is 4 to 5 times faster than before in such simple things such as navigating through menus etc.
- the gallery is faster (thumbsnails are built lightning fast now)
- the startup time is faster
- no more crashes/restarts while being on the phone with someone
- no more “i can hear you but you cannot hear me” issues
- PERFECT wireless network recognition and joining (no more error messages regarding problems joining network)
- battery lifetime is (for me) now around 3x longer than before.
i was so close to give this phone back, but now i am definitely going to keep it.
hope you guys have the same luck.
cheers,
s

Yes, you can change the model number and update. But beware: If you back up your phone before hand, then change the model number, then update, DO NOT restore the settings. Your phone will not start up. This happened to me. If this happens, turn your phone off, then press:
* 3 Green-call-button, hold them all down and start your phone. When your phone gets to the menu release the * 3 green-call-button. This will reset your phone. It will not restore your previous firmware version. You will have to manually set your settings to the way they were. You can restore contacts and user files with no problems. Did not try restoring messages.
July 19th, 2007 at 11:11 am
Be very careful changing the product code on your N95. If you do this you have automatically voided your warranty and if you intend to use apps like MSN Messenger you will not be able to. 3 apparently stores a certificate on the phone that prevents other people installing MSN Messenger, Skype, Yahoo etc on there phone and using it with another carrier. debranding the phone will DELETE the certificate once you update to ver 12. 3 will not provide you the certificate and you have to take the phone to Nokia. Nokia will charge you to update the firmware to 3′s firmaware as you have voided the warranty. I’m sure 3 will be releasing the software soon enough at which point it will be made available through the NSU.

Hey All,
I’ve just found the change log for this new firmware for all us curious people out there

July 20th, 2007 at 10:38 am
Im having the exact same problem as ‘n95 fan’. Any ideas??
July 21st, 2007 at 5:11 pm
n95fan and pan:
I’ve had the same problem as you guys. I even called nokia support but they just had me restore factory settings but still no luck.
Anyways, just make sure you have the latest PC SUITE/NSU software.
During installation, you’ll need to have the AC Adapter whether your phone is fully charged or not. That got me install the firmware. Hope that helps

hey any chance of 3 Australia releasing a v12 update any time in the near future?
July 24th, 2007 at 2:50 am
I’m in sweden, my N95 isn’t locked to my provider, dunno why since i’m on contract.
But i couldn’t update, just said i had the latest, but i was on 10.0.18 or something when there was supposed to be a 12 out.
After changing product code i updated and after a day my new 2GB sandisk memory card started to act up, and now after testing with my 1GB twinmos card it’s acting up too.
Don’t know if it’s the new firmware but be carefull.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:24 am
After updating to ver 12 you cannot reinstall again, Nokia have removed the reinstall option so if your phone goes t!ts up ypur knakered if you have the wrong firmware on it.

I just tried the update on my Australian 3 branded N95 (for about the 100th time – been waiting and waiting!) and it finally said I could update to V12!!! It’s downloading right now – all 111MB
August 4th, 2007 at 4:59 am

Ver 12 is now available to 3 customers in Australia
August 5th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
My phone was recently firmware flashed by O2-UK, I’m still running on 11.0.026 – it seems worse than the old version 10 for crashes, frozen applications menus (anyone else getting this?) and some weird “glitch” where it flashes up for a fraction of a second a menu with folder options “Main” and “Status”. I did not get any problems with losing the Maps when I upgraded to version 11 though – the maps were on my memory card – but I did lose my Nokia navigation license (62 pounds sterling!) which I had to reinstate. May I extend thanks to the chap who posted somewhere in here with an email address for openbit technologies – they sent me my license code within a day – but without a decent roaming internet connection (crappy UK coverage with O2), I’ve since found I need to re-input the license code every time – my advice would be, if upgrading firmware, write down your license code first and then reinstate it while you’re near a Wi-Fi connection to save any future problems.

Just upgraded my 3 Aus N95 to V.12 – the assisted GPS works lightening fast – however the Search programme (not the search in Map, just Search that comes with the N95) is corrupted once i update to 1.22… reinstalling V.12 to see what’s going on.
