N95 GPS tips from Nokia support
GPS, N95 May 30th, 2007***************
In N95 the GPS receiver is located in the bottom of the device, below the numeric keyboard. When using the receiver, slide the numeric keypad open
and hold the device upright in your hand at an angle of about 45 degrees, with a clear view of the sky. Make sure, that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver.
Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes. Establishing a GPS connection in the car may take longer.
If your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider the following:
- If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal.
- If the numeric keypad slide is closed, open it.
- If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.
- Check that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver of your device.
- If the weather conditions are bad, in such a case the signal strength may also be affected.
- Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes.
- Avoid to use screen saver when GPS connection is establishing.
NOTE: The GPS receiver takes its power from the battery. Using the GPS receiver may drain the battery faster.

Why did they put the gps under the “0″ key on the bottom. Would it not have made more sense to have it on the top of the phone.
May 31st, 2007 at 3:56 am
Yeah I agree Steve, but for connection times, yes they vary from seconds to minutes, at times i activate GPS and i instantly connect, but other times I connect withing 60-90secs, and its all good after that, i always have trouble getting a connection on the train, as i assume the trains speed cannot keep up with the sattelite ?? not sure

And it may be obvious but wasn’t really mentioned, it helps if you don’t have a phone case on the phone if you are getting a weak signal (or limited satellite pickups).

I’ve been having massive problems connecting my GPS since I upgraded the firmware… I took the little bugger on a walk (about 30 mins of walking about) and it still didn’t connect. It used to connect, all be it after about 5-10 mins before the update. So I’m not sure if the update is related to it.
June 14th, 2007 at 5:22 pm
my N95 is not connecting with the GPS and always trying to connect but donot communicate with any of the sateliteand also just shows me a calculated point on a back date.
June 16th, 2007 at 9:59 am
I’ve waited for 30min + for this thing to connect to a satelite whilst sitting in a park with a clear view of the sky. This really pushes their vague “several mins” to connect. There is definitely something wrong with the GPS on this phone. I’ve already taken one back based on the flakiness of the GPS only to find that the replacement had the same issues.
Each time i use it however, it finds the satellites rather quickly, however it does not lock on to them. This leads me to believe that it is not the receiver that is the problem and more an issue with either the software or the firmware.
NOKIA NEEDS TO FIX THE GPS ON THIS PHONE BEFORE THEY CAN GO SELLING IT AS A GPS PHONE BECAUSE IT SIMPLY DOESN’T WORK.
I am paying an extra $27 a month because i wanted a phone with GPS on it. But it seems to be $27 a month down the toilet.

This is interesting (and discouraging). I bought my N95 yesterday and tried it indoors without any luck. I then traveled to work this morning by train without getting any GPS connection. I then sat outside for five minutes patiently waiting for it to connect — without any luck. Finally, I walked from the train station to my office (a small town with no high buildings around) for eight minutes without getting any connection whatsoever.
Is this what I paid €600 for?!
June 20th, 2007 at 8:15 am
Same thing here, bought it two days ago, no way to get it connected to the satellite network.
Nice piece of…. of a phone…

So, I’m not sure I understand how to actually connect to a GPS satellite correctly. I’ve done all you guys have said re: downloading maps and transferrin to phone (thanks for that by the way, couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to do it around my College’s proxy + firewall!) but then when I fire up “Maps” on my phone I get nothing, just a maps of the globe.
Then I figured there must be another program on the phone to force the connection to the satellite, so I opened “GPS Data” hoping that would attempt to connect to the GPS satellite and lo! it tried to. For about a second, then stopped dead and tries to ‘calculate GPS data’ for another second, but then tells me when I open one of the menu items in GPS Data that I have ‘no connection.
Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? Or what I haven’t done? Man I love this phone, and I suppose this is the price we pay for having the equivalent of a Linux-based PC for a phone! So much we can do by ourselves, but so much hastle!
Cheers.

Hi Alex, you did the right thing by going to GPS data whereby your GPS receiver will attempt to lock-on to the satellite signals…you’ll have to wait a few minutes before you get a GPS fix, after which you can then switch to your maps program. For me, it took only about 2 minutes to get a Gps fix.
There are a lot of discussion topics in N95users.com forum. I think you’ll be able to find answers to most of your questions there.

Hi there, I bought this mobile for a week plus already but still couldnt use the gps. can anyone type all the steps here when u open the gps? is it necessary to download the map into the mobile? also when i try to use the gps, it always says “no internet connection found and check application settings”, i’ve tried changing the settings many times but still i couldnt get it worked and now im so frustrated. thank you

Has anyone compared the GPS on the N95 with the new Navigator 6110? I would be interested in getting rid of my n95 and replacing it with the 6110 if it actually works. It would seem like a bit of a kick in the guts from nokia if they released a cheaper GPS phone which actually worked. Also, and this is just a suspicion of mine, that the N95users.com forum is a bit dodge.. Every post i made on there detailing my bad experiences with this phone seemed to be very quickly followed by a glowingly positive one saying how great the gps on this phone is. I could be wrong.. just a suspicion really.

Hi All, A few tips for N95 maps/GPS. GPS will have ALOT of trouble locking on if you are moving at all. Upgrading to V12 helps some with AGPS but still, stay in one spot and it helps. As for GPS and Maps, if you are using planet3 (3planet?) as your connection & you have NOT signed up for an internet service pack, you will NOT be connecting to the net (for searches, updates, etc). Use a wlan in the area or use mobile internet (costs might be high). Once you have selected some form of usable ineternet connection (wlan, mobile internet, or 3planet with internet pack) you will get a lock much quicker (sometimes instant) with internet aid, and searches & upgrades will work well. Please note, there are still many areas where the map does not have address coverage, but at least its something.
Cheers, Andy

Hello Andy,
I have found the opposite to be true. If you are moving (say in a car) it tends to lock on quicker. It is very sensitive to roofs and tall buildings and doesnt really work in the melbourne CBD.
Standing still helps, but connection at slow pace (like walking) is poor.
As far as network access goes, i downloaded the complete maps for australia with the nokia map updater tool (available form the website) and i can now search of any address in australia and get a position (pretty good coverage too). I have my network connection turned off and can still search.
hope this is helpful folks!

Well I had the last version of firmware and gps locked on within a couple of minutes this version shows 5 satellite’s and I still couldn’t get a lock even after 1 hr of driving round. Well at least my mates found it funny telling me I could stop everybody I see in the street and ask directions it would get me there quicker

I got a N95 which has been sitting here for a while. Dad brought it home from work and no one uses it. Tried to do the gps on it and there is no way in hell it can connect to the satellite. I was looking to swap him my 6110 Nav for it but i think ill keep with my 6110 as the GPS actually works, and works well.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:32 pm
Small tip, if you are getting no luck with GPS connection, despite getting good satellite signal, just turn off the handset, remove battery, and power it on again. This works for my n95, and is a common fix for many phone software issues.
September 3rd, 2007 at 9:16 am
N95 prints out the position DD,DD and not DDMMSS,SSS. Big difference and annoying. Eg E11,50 = E11 30 00,000
Does anyone know how to fix?

the first time i locked onto my gps, it took me a good 45 minutes. Lucky though as i was attending a garden party so i just went to gps data and view satellite info and waited for the bars to get black. Took a good 45 minutes sitting on the table with the keypad slid up and facing the sky on a clear afternoon. Subsequent attempts around the same city would see me getting a fix in around 5 minutes and sometimes less.
However, when i start heading outstation, like around 200kms from the city to a different town/city, it requires a good 15 to 20 minutes to lock on again. This is all done in kuala lumpur malaysia.
When i recently was in perth again for work, it took a good 20 minutes to get a fix again so i’m inclined to believe that certain positioning satellites cover a certain area and when you try to reconnect, it might automatically try the ones you were previously connected to and if its able to reach it, bingo. But when you move to a different area, you need to contact different satellites i suppose? A very primitive notion and simple deduction so someone pls tell me if i’m wrong so i know and don’t go about spreading this deduction and get laughed at. Hehe.
September 20th, 2007 at 6:25 am
even i sitting in clear place, phone facing to the sky over 60mins still cannot lock on to the satelite, im only can see the 3-5 blank rectangle show on the phone! ut cannot conect.
what i need to do again?
September 21st, 2007 at 6:02 am

December 26th, 2007 at 5:10 am
I cant get a lock onto any satelites with my N95 but my hand held garmin geko GPS sitting next to it on the deck locks onto satelites in 15 seconds, it looks like its a pretty common problem with the n95.
December 27th, 2007 at 1:07 am
Sounds like you don’t have any map data.
Did you download/install the maps via nokia map loader?
January 6th, 2008 at 9:17 am
All you people are absolutely right
I feel bad about chosing an expensive phone over 6110 as I have witnessed nice GPS in the latter. In a month since i purchased this expensive (never detectable) GPS phone, it has only been able to locate the satellite twice. I indeed have been taking care of these instructions they say about keeping it upright clear sky, NOKIA map loader and other excuses, but no use.
nokia needs to help people come out of this deciept and come with a fix
January 8th, 2008 at 7:11 am
i used to own a n95, when using navigation, i used to just keep trying to press find route, it would say no gps avail, or something cause it couldn’t find them. but if i tried to do that over and over after about 3 mins it would lock on, if i didn’t it would take FOREVER. i have an n95 8G now and it locks on in seconds, so whatever the problem was, nokia must have fixed it, try downloading the latest firmware.
January 9th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Hi, everyone ! I’m from Bulgaria and i got a Nokia N95 8GB for 2 weeks! Before it connects for the first time I’ve been waiting for 30 min. so I think that you just must wait.
February 11th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Hi everyone, just a warning and a little help needed.
I have a Nokia N73 and my daughter an N95. I used the N73 for over 12 months with a BT GPS receiver for satellite navigation never had a problem. I then upgraded to the latest version firmware from Nokia in January, since then I can’t connect to ANY GPS receiver. My daughters N95 was also working fine connecting to the internal GPS or my bluetooth GPS. The N95 developed a screen fault and went back to Vodafone for a repair, when they sent her phone back they had upgraded it to the latest version of firmware… Yep you guessed it, it will not connect to any GPS receiver. She sent it back for repair and specifically asked for any phone not be given the latest firmware. The phone was not repairable they said, so they sent a refurbed N95 with the latest firmware! That is rendered useless to any GPS device as well. I have contacted Nokia UK, and Vodafone Service, Nokia has ignored my letter, Vodafone said they have other Nokia users with the same problem.
If you use a NOKIA for Sat Nav DO NOT install the firmware V4.0726.2.0.1. on an N73. If you have this problem please contact BBC’s Watchdog programme like I have it might be the only way to get Nokia to listen, and stop others ruining their phones. They just ignore the individual. Sorry for the length of this post.
Cheers

Wow, seeing all these negative comments is really discouraging
My gps is working ok
i used nokia map loader to load the maps, then with my keypad open i went to gps and waited a while
and it connected
I am curious though
is there no way i can get directions to places? when i type a place in it seems to just come up with some promt asking if i want to buy some nokia thing
i can get a fix on my position
but no directions?
how do i get directions
and also a voice would be good, telling me where to go, but im not asking too much
any help would be appreciated
February 16th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Well thats because u have gps u need A-GPS (asisted gps) you have to buy the program like everyone else directions dont come free yes u can look where u are and see places but for your N95 ro talk to u and guide u around u need to buy the softwere i had the same problem with my N95 until i read the mannuel lol
February 17th, 2008 at 5:09 am
I’m still waiting for this thing to connect. I never had success with it connecting ever since having the phone 6 months ago. I have the phone outside with clear view and read this entire post and still can’t connect. I can connect to a bluetooth receive no problem in seconds but if i do that, what’s the point of having a integrated GPS.
February 21st, 2008 at 2:32 am
PEOPLE IF YOUR GPS IS NOT CONECTING SOMETHING IS WRONG CONTACT NOKIA I HAVE HAD MY N95 8G FOR 1 MONTH AND NO PROBLEMS SO FAR. CONTACT NOKIA

hey did you know you can get a bluetooth gps reciever to boost your signal to your phone. it just pairs up with your phone there are numerous devices out there. for example a SIRF 111 bluetooth gps reciever
April 25th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
bluetooth receiver does not boost the signal. It gets the signal and then sends it to the phone it in its self is the gps device if your having issues with the nokia maps try Garmin Xt it works really well i have it working with australian maps and internal gps on my nokia n95

Hi
I have been trying to post a new thread but to no avail. I am trying to synch my mobile with my PC using the home media (through Wifi) rather than through Bluetooth or USB cable.
Any idea how?
Thanks
April 28th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Well since this isn’t a forum you won’t have much chance at posting a thread. it’s a hints and tips blog where users can contribute their favourite hints and tips. If you need help with your bluetooth you should try one of the established N95 forums. Or figure out what it was and then post a hint/tip on how to setup bluetooth sync’ing.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Ok! fair enough – let me reword my post…
Is there anybody out there willing to offer hints and tips on how to synch my N95 to my PC using WIFI?
Thanks

Hi All,
I recently bought a N95 8gb, having the same issue like most of you, my GPS takes forever to lock (30+ min). Clear sky open area etc… but it’s just doesn’t lock. I could see it detected 6 or 7 sats in the area, but it just sits there waiting for GPS.
But after reading this forum i figured out a way to do a quick lock (not sure will it work for others), but here is what i did.
First, thx for the person who said shut off the phone and take the batt out and restart the phone, I found it works. Second, I chose offline to disable my cellphone freq. and thirdly, (this might look stupid) I used the usb cable as an antenna, connected it at the bottom of the phone and point the other end as high as possible. For me, from 30+ min it cuts down to max 3 min to lock. And once it’s locked it stays lock for awhile. (and I did this indoor, 5 to 6 sats locked within 3 min)
Cheers..
May 5th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
I have never had issues getting a fix on my n95 8gb. it gets a fix indoors, outdoors or in the car. The main thing is not to be moving when you get a fix. I think the longest it takes is 10 minutes(may have taken a bit longer when in an aircraft
) But standing still (open the phone, start sports tracker put the phone down) this morning for example took about 2 min get a fix in the house before I did the morning commute. And that is standard.

Hi everyone
Can you tell me if the GPS in the N95i (8Gb) will cost me to use it?
August 12th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I have a N95 and a N82. both have the lattest version of Nokia Maps. In the same place I tryed to get a gps connection…the N95 just don’t work, and the N82 gets a connection instantly. N95 sucks…
and my english too ehehehe.
August 14th, 2008 at 9:15 am
James, the GPS will not cost you to use it. However, you might incur data charges. If you have an unlimited data plan, not an issue. If you want turn-by-turn voice directions, you will have to pay for that if you’re going to use Nokia Maps. You can get free turn-by-turn using amazegps, but it requires a data connection since it downloads map data on-the-fly.
August 19th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Bought my N95 8GB today and have had no issues with GPS. May have been an issue with previous model. Even tried a number of other GPS/navigation apps and they worked too.
August 30th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I need free turn by turn amazegps
May 10th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Step by step instructions (worked 4 me!)
1. goto tools
2. goto connectivity
3. select gps data
4. put your phone upside down (slider must be open)
5. When it lets goto latitute
6. then wait for gps, phone upside down
7. when it has connection you can use maps andsoever…
December 11th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
My Nokia Maps worked before I did hard reset. Now it is not working. I checked GPS Data in Tools/Connectivity, there is no GPS connection no matter upside down or not.
Why hard-reset breaks the GPS only?
March 25th, 2010 at 1:43 am
Hello. for those who unable to get gps satelite data with their n95/n95 8gb, pls uninstall properly and check the gps antenna is connected to the pcb or not. alot of n95 user claims that n95 gps is not working. actually its working. just ur antenna is not connected properly to the antenna pin connector. What you need to do is adjust the antenna pin a little bit longer so can connect to the pcb surface. You also can clean the pcb surface using sandpaper or use penknife to scratch it. IMPORTANT: when you want to install the antenna part back, pls make sure the pin is not accidentally pressed and become OPEN with the PCB. Alot of outside there having this problem cannot get gps signal because their device is not connected properly with the antenna. Alot of nokia or AP set / recond set is changed/installed new housing without knowledge. This cause n95 buyer feel disappointed.
I’ve done alot of this n95 b4. and its 100% working unless your firmware really got bug.
April 14th, 2010 at 10:45 am
If u guys dare enough, remove the antenna and solder a a longer wire, then gps works indoors even, locks in 5-10 secs on rainy days (low signal)….google n95 gps mod…
April 15th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
@Mr. Jason Nokia S. Engineer,
im having trouble getting a signal from satellite(gps) since i’ve changed the housing of my n95 classic. i dont know where to find that antenna and PCB ur talking about, im not really a phone technician, i just paid the phoneshop technician to replace my original n95 housing.. do u think i should put back my original housing to make it working again? pls help.. thanks a lot. here’s my email : mjrc111@yahoo.ca

Mine used to work fine – since I upgraded, I had some concerns.
I followed the response # 49 above.
Then I saw, Assisted GPS, Integrated GPS – both checked.
I disabled Assisted GPS – its now instant.
I will have to wait and see, if this is going to be the case.
May 12th, 2010 at 4:08 am
After following the response # 49 above, go to Options, and choose Positioning (from memory) – where you can disable Assisted GPS.
May 12th, 2010 at 4:15 am
Mine is N95-3 or N95-NAM.
