Download Australian N95 Maps
GPS, N95 May 3rd, 2007NOTE: Rather than exceed the bandwidth on my hosted account the maps are currently offline.
With the advent of the new Nokia mapping application, I’ll review in July whether to place the maps back online.
Includes East Coast and West Coast Australia
Singapore
Hong Kong
South Korea
The file needs to be uncompressed (RAR) and copied to your memory card.

Tired of your old cell phone provider? Why not get a pay as you go cell phone and avoid the hassle of long phone contracts. There are lots of cell phone plans that are more convenient and let you decide just how much you spend on your phone.

thanks for a great website. im downloading the aussie maps as per the website and would appreciate some detailed instructions as to how to install onto phone
May 7th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Hi Eric,
Basically for you its pretty easy if you download the file.
Just need to unrar it to the memory card. The archive file already
contains the directory structure needed.
It will take a while as it has a large number of files to extract. So patience is the key.
May 7th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
thanks for replying. the file is currently transferring across. a couple of questions:
- what maps programs is this?
- is it turn by turn?
- what about voice guidance?
What are the maps that were installed when I bought the n95?
May 7th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
The maps program that came with the phone.
Turn by turn works.
Voice guidance you pay extra for.
The maps initially installed on your N95 are partial maps. They are also stored in phone memory, these are better stored on your memory card. You will need to remove the maps from phone memory for these to work. You can do that by either initiating a hard reset (search the website for details) or by using the maploader program to delete the maps already in your phone.
May 8th, 2007 at 10:25 am
hi
thanks for those previous instructions. the maps downloaded from here have been installed onto the card. I’ve also removed the original maps from the phone via maploader. this afternoon on testing, I couldn’t see any difference in the maps or the screens. will the gps find the new maps on the card or do you have to point to it?? Also I don’t know if this would make any difference, but for some reason i wasn’t able to to transfer onto the card the entire ‘private’ folder. instead i have 2 folders; `101f8857′ and `20001f63′. is this ok? pls help.
May 8th, 2007 at 11:00 am
Those two folders need to live inside the Private folder.
Just having them in the ‘root’ directory of the memory card won’t actually work. As long as those two folders are inside the Private directory you should be ok.
The difference might not be the map quality (although for me the downloaded maps had a tonne more street names etc), but also in the ability to search for locations.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:07 am
Hi great site, pardon my ignorance but what does “unrar” mean
As a total novice can you help me with instructions: I have not downloaded any maps onto the N95 as yet.
Im having prolems with the map loader not recognising I have the USB connection between the phone and my PC
May 10th, 2007 at 7:36 am
winrar is a product made by http://www.rarlabs.com
You’ll need it to unpack the file.
As this is not a support forum I am unable to offer one on one coaching, perhaps another user will be able to answer your question in more detail.
Also read this article to learn more about the maps process.

How do I get the unzipped files from rar onto the memory card. I have copied all the files including the “Private” folder but after using rar cant see the “Private” directory in the Nokia memory card liting. Someone please help!!!!
May 10th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
all i did was extract the private folder to a new folder on my pc. i then simply moved the whole onto the card, inserted into the phone and bobs your uncle.
May 12th, 2007 at 12:40 am
The private folder is a hidden one, you need to enable viewing hidden folders in windows explorer to see it. (Tools, folder options, view, show hidden files&folders)
May 12th, 2007 at 2:18 am
Thanks Eric for your help.
Im just starting out with all this stuff.
I attempted to download all the Eastern Australia maps direct from the Nokia Map Loader, had the N95 connected via USB took all night on ADSL+2 high speed connection.
Said that download was complete. Opened up Maps on N95, it zoomed in on my suburb, but just had 1 plain yellow line, not street data, which seemed bazzar.
So here goes:
1/Put micro SD card into PC (not oonected via USB to N95)
2/Extract maps via RAR
3/Create new folder in windows? or do I create a new folder in the Nokia N95 folder when connected to the phone? I treid doing that the 1st time and it wont let you create new folders, so assume I create 1 in windows called.. extract the map data via rar to the new folder then copy that directly onto the MICRO SD card in the computer.
4/ I assume then that the new “Private” folder will be installed onto the micro sd as copied.
5/ Remove the SD card from the PC complete with the maps.
6/ Insert SD card into N95
7/ Turn on N95
8/ Access “Maps”
What happens from there… I assume I have a selection/list of Maps as per the download?
Was also wondering how to get from there to GPS or does it integrate?
I have subscribed to the Voice Navigation, but not sure how it works with the maps? Any help woulod be appreciated as I am ready to throw the phone in the bin!!!
Thanks for your help.

I had problems copying this folder using Nokia PC Suite – I got an error message when I tried to drag the Private folder onto the phone memory card. I tried creating a folder called Private on the memory card, but got an error message saying “the phone rejected the operation”. So I removed the card from the phone and used an adapter to stick it in my laptop’s card reader. When I looked at it with Explorer, I found that there was already a Private folder that wasn’t displaying through the Nokia File Browser. So I guess you should connect using a card reader, or with the phone in Mass Storage mode.
Hope this helps someone.
May 13th, 2007 at 1:28 am
southstate, i do remember having issues with copying the private folder via the file manager in the pc suite. scrap that. it won’t work coz there is a file (hidden i think) called private already. what i did was put my micro sd card into my printers sd card slot (or any other card slot). i found that private folder opened it and deleted EVERYTHING that was in there. Don’t know what they were, and didn’t care. I then moved the private folder that was sitting in a directory on my pc into the private folder on the card. be patient it takes time. i then simply put the micro card back into the phone, turned it off then on again and it started working. this should work for you. all the best

hi i did wat everyone said above and still cant get it to work, restarted… nothing cant seem to find satelites im in western aus. please help..
May 22nd, 2007 at 1:57 am
Hi,
i am starting to copy them to my card.
how long does it take? is it faster touse a card reader, or the N95 in Mass storage mode. it has taken about three hours so far, and im not even 1/5 way through the progress bar.
May 22nd, 2007 at 5:48 am
How much detail do these maps have?
i have finally managed to install the australian maps, and while i do get SOME street level data, i cant use it with network switched off, because it still wants to download the street level data?
it doesnt really appear to have much more data than before on it?
May 22nd, 2007 at 1:01 pm
my maps work has all street details and stuff but still cant detect satellites
May 24th, 2007 at 9:15 am
As per sparkyboy above I cannot detect any satellites in Adelaide, Australia. Does anyone have any suggestions?
May 24th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Ok just to clarify. I need to delete the pre loaded maps using the map loader. Then i copy the contents of the private folder that is extracted from this download, and paste them into the private folder on my memory card. Is this right??
May 24th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Read this article to see exactly how I did it.
Basically you have the gist of it. Just make sure you clear the original maps from phone memory. I did it with a hard reset, perhaps the map loader will work effectively as well, I never tried that option.
May 24th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
oh also another quick question, im with virgin mobile. do i have two network settings in my phone, virgin WAP and virgin internet, anyone know which of these should be set for the gps to use?
May 25th, 2007 at 1:36 am
I am on Virgin Mobile. If you want updating, you can use virgin internet. However, if you have downloaded all the maps, you do not need an internet connection for gps use i.e. route planning, navigation etc. The internet connection is only required to update the maps, afaik.
May 31st, 2007 at 4:20 am
Loading the unrared achive to the phone via USB now…
Is it possible to remove locations like sth korea using the map loader later?
May 31st, 2007 at 4:40 am
The extra couple of small maps I put on there take up around 2MB of data. Your call if you want to try and extract it, but it hardly seems worth the effort.
June 2nd, 2007 at 4:02 am
Firstly thanks for putting this up for download. Do I replace the existing ‘private’ folder or do I just replace the two relevent folders within it. My private folder on my phone has 7 other folders such as 20001EA8 and 10202dce and Im wondering if I keep these or be rid of them. Thanks
June 2nd, 2007 at 4:52 am
Just unpack the files directly. Anything that needs to get overwritten should get overwritten.
As long as you do a hard reset on your phone first.
The run maps.
Then unpack the archive you should be fine.
June 2nd, 2007 at 6:59 am
Hi guys,
I’ve read through all of the postings here and have to say I’m mighty confused. I have downloaded and unpacked the rar file, not a problem.
What folder on the memory card does the 2 folders need to be copied to? is it the E:Private one? If so, this isn’t possible as you can unhide and view it on your phone, but when copying the information across from the computer, you cannot see the folder, even after making it viewable, it won’t appear. Suggestions please.
June 2nd, 2007 at 7:17 am
Don’t overthink the solution.
Unpack the rar file directly to the memory cards root directory.
Makes no difference that the private directory is hidden or unhidden. You don’t need to go into it or view it anyway. If you really want to change the attribute bit to unhide it temporarily, the phone will make it hidden again anyway.
June 2nd, 2007 at 7:21 am
Cheers for the solution – I’ll unpack it directly to the phone, thanks again.
June 6th, 2007 at 12:15 pm
For the potential benefit of others: I wasn’t sure what Maploader was or where to find it on my N95, but I found it here for download from the Australian Nokia site:
http://www.nokia.com.au/nokia/0,8764,101782,00.html
Additional notes on my experience with getting these maps onto my memory card:
1. I tried to use a card reader first. I could see the Private folder, but any attempt to copy files to it were denied, saying that the card was write-protected. Hmmm. I checked and double checked, but the card was definitely not write protected. I tried the ‘lock’ switch on the card adapter in both positions just to be sure, but neither setting worked.
2. So I reverted to connecting my N95 to my PC via a cable connection, and selecting the ‘Mass Storage’ option on my phone, as opposed to PC Suite, etc. Found the Private folder, and am copying the files successfully as I type. That said, the copy process is currently estimating 10 hours and 45 mins to finish the copy. So patience definitely is required! Presumably if the card reader had work it would have been a little faster??
June 7th, 2007 at 3:23 am
I’m also doing what you did Ross i.e. extracting via mass storage.
3 hours and only 30% done!
Will it matter that I didn’t delete the original maps on the phone memory yet? I forgot that step and want to do it after I’ve finished extracting the maps onto the memory card.
Big thank to myN95 for the maps!
June 7th, 2007 at 10:21 am
Hi there. After trying to install the maps for Australia using Nokia’s site I’m starting again to hopefully get the “search address” function to work without a network connection. Looks like I’m in for a looooong night. I’ll try it as suggested here. Gret site BTW. Expect it’ll be very popular as more of these are sold.
June 7th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
OK, I have a bit of a confusing matter. I downloaded the latest maps using MapLoader, and according to the program, all went OK. However, if I have my memory card in the phone, it only shows sparse details, if I take my memory card out and re-run the maps again, I get all the details (street names, minor streets etc). How can I rectify this, as obviously I dont want to take my memory card out everytime I need to refer to a map. Thanks in advance.
June 8th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I only got my N95 2 days ago and when I attempted to down load the maps from the MAPLOADER program I realised it was going to take 12hrs. I cancelled the process and since then everytime I’ve tried to do something with MAPLOADER it freezes and does not transfer any information or delete any existing maps.
I have tried installing and uninstalling the software on 2 different computers with no luck. I’ve been reading about a hard reset but I’m a bit concerned about doing such a thing to a new phone. Will I lose my Optus MMS and GPRS settings if I do this?
I’m currently downloading the rar file that was posted above, hopefully that will work. If anyone has a similar to problem to mine can you please let me know how you solve it. All I want to do is get the maps to work on the phone.
I talked to Optus today and the guy said the map thing was a bit of a con and the ‘whereis’ is function on OptusZoo is cheaper and easier to use. I’m yet to get my maps to work yet but will let you know when I compare the 2.
June 9th, 2007 at 8:06 am
Worked a treat!
Downloaded MapLoader from the link above (many thanks to Ross for this), plugged my memory card to my PC using a card reader, cleared the maps using map loader, copied the “private” folder over from the extracted archive, and hey presto! all of the Aussie maps!
Woohoo!
All up took 45 minutes!
June 9th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
@JadeMonkee: did u have any problems when u plugged in ur memory card? i plugged mine into my pc and when i tried to open it i got a ‘do u want to format’ message box
June 11th, 2007 at 3:42 am
Thank you very much for this maps and help
I will never use Nokias map loader again. instead i will search the internet for maps and download them in 5 minutes instead of 5 hours.
June 11th, 2007 at 4:45 am
After a bit of toing and froing [deleting, re-adding] I got it going.
The maps are far better than the nokia ones. The only problem is that street numbers are confused. Good stuff.
June 12th, 2007 at 8:44 am
It is very good stuff. I copied the contents of the card to a folder and copied the maps into that folder.
Whilst I was there I reformatted the card to fat32.
Then I copied all the folders back again.
Works a charm. A lot more detail than the ones provided by Nokia. Nokias maps did not even have the new M7 motorway in sydney.
June 13th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
I was wondering if anyone knew that these maps could be added onto the existing countries map. i.e. I have the maps of a few countries already loaded on my card and I wanted to add Australian maps from here.
Is that possible?
June 14th, 2007 at 11:44 am
It was nice ………but it was 170Mb after un zip…..and i put it on card become 700BM 0.0…..some how my phone can never find a GPS Can some 1 tell me y?????….i got virson 11.00 and tryed out door……nothing working ??????
June 15th, 2007 at 4:38 am
good
June 16th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Hi, Huge thanks to whoever posted this download. Tried using MapLoader at least 10 times and its a piece of crap in my opinion! Most of the time it wouldn’t start, but the one time it did, it was gonna takeover 6 hours to download 70Mg on my ADSL 8Mgb connection! Got the file from here in a few mins!
:D Thankyou so much! Great site btw!
June 16th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
I followed the instructions by Admin and had no problems. I removed everything in the Private folder of the Memory Card as Eric suggested first. I download the Nokia MapLoader software and used it to remove the maps (I set it in motion over the USB Cable to the phone). I then set the copying of the unrar’d archive to the Memory Card (via the card reader). I then went to bed to save time (well my patience). I put the card back in the N95 and went for a walk outside – no problems.
If you cant get a fix, from inside Maps, try doing a Options/View/Satellite Info – where it forces a connect to triagnulate your position via 5 (min 3) satellites (if there is a satellite to connect to).
The software is a bit like pre-warp sensis data, it tells you to go down roads etc when routing that dont exist etc. However would be good on foot as well as car. Any word on a dash mount for the car from Nokia or others?
June 16th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
can someone please help. I had downloaded the maps onto the phone and it was working. Later when I was mucking around with the phone, I downloaded the voice commands, I tried to load the maps again and now it loas up to 30% and goes back to the main menu. I don’t know what to do now. Do I reformat this memorycard and start all over again? Please help.
June 17th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Hi, I have just loaded the map that i have downloaded this website to my memory card. Could you please tell me how to load them? i cannot load the map at all. Where do i satrt from. Pelase tell me ASAP. I have not used the map at all since i bought it.
June 17th, 2007 at 3:49 am
Hi Gwest
Advice from forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm says to:
1. Format the phone card
2. Reset the phone using *#7370#
3. Use maploader to reload the maps
Found this blog after, I had the same problem, but ended up sticking my N95 into the local nokia service centre as I couldnt get it to work again. I thought I might have a firmware version problem as well. Let me know if it works.Goodluck.
June 17th, 2007 at 5:15 am
hey thanks for the help guys.. took a whole 20mins to get the maps on the phone including:
1 – Downloading maps from above link = 5mins
2 – Downloading and deleting Maps from phone with Nokia map loader = 5mins
3 – Removing Memory card from phone, placing it into adapter, then into USB card reader = 2mins
4 – Unrar maps files into temp directory = 3mins
5 – Copying Private folder to memory card = 5mins
6 – Not having to wait 20hrs to download directly to phone = PRICELESS!!!
Opened up maps app and GPS kicked in and found me at home.
Thanks again people.
June 17th, 2007 at 6:46 am
TWilliams, Thanks for the advice, I hope this works and will let you know.

Salman:
If you copied the whole Private folder to your phone it should work just by opening maps thats what happened with me. Have you removed the old maps from your phone with Nokia Maploader though… could be the problem..
heres link again if not, phone has to be in mass storage mode as well btw..

June 24th, 2007 at 7:21 am
Hi – I had enourmous trouble with no detail in my maps. Main roads only!! Could not find any locations and directions were not express via freeways etc.
Having doing the following (as above)
1 – Downloading maps from above link = 5mins
2 – Downloading and deleting Maps from phone with Nokia map loader = 4 hours
3 – Removing Memory card from phone, placing it into adapter, then into USB card reader = 2mins (I tried this and it did not work on my reader) I connected my phone via the USB cable.
4 – Unrar maps files onto desktop
5 – Copying Private folder CONTENTS and pasted into private folder to replace existing files on memory card. Took probly 6-8 hours! Be patient it is worth it!
The GPS is excellent it works very well with best routes too. I have been using it not connected to the internet and it all works fine so I think it is totally free. Apart from voice direction which is worth paying for.
Persivere cause it is great when it is up and running.

Hi, does any one know how to update the maps. I have installed the one from the link above and its works great but the area we are in is a newly developed suburb so all I see is green parkland when I drive through the street. Thanks..ps has anyone here tried the Route66 software, some of the other forums I’ve been reading swers it’s a better option than the nokia maps.. any comments? =)
July 7th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
theo: I went to buy a card reader instead of downloading and unziping the files through USB cable. It work and only took around 3 to 4 hours in total. You also have to hard reset the phone so you might lose everything so do a backup of your contacts and photos b4 you hard reset. Then you do the steps again. It should be okay.
July 8th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

I want to try, but where can I download it?
September 30th, 2007 at 10:45 am
Guys,
I’m new here, but the download time of the maps from Nokia is really REALLY pissing me off – over 20 hours !!! On an 8Mb ADSL connection !!
Why ?
I’ve uploaded the Australian maps to http://macinations.net/files/n95/maps (I have one of those ‘unlimited’ bandwidth accounts ) for those that need them.
Jon
(P.S. The file is a 72Mb ZIP – it will be finished about 15 minutes after I post this !!)

Unfortunately you have to pay for Navigation…it’s sad that we, as consumers of Nokia’s ‘flagship’ model, still have to pay for Nav while others who purchase a mid-range model (like a 6110 Navigator) get it free!
Here, in Australia, its about $130 for 3 years which works out to 83 cents a week…not too bad in my opinion…but I’d still prefer FREE navigation…(I am human after all!)
Cheers
