Stolen N95 (seeking advice)
GPS, N95, WiFi April 19th, 2008**The stolen N95 doesn’t belong to any of the staff at myN95, but since this is a community site I figured a few of you may have some advice for Juan**
Even though I canceled my account, my stolen n95 (at gunpoint) is still logging in to the internet through a software i installed called fring. Its logging in to my msn chat. It seems the thiefs dont know about this. I had purchased an unlimited internet plan which seems to be running though my provider denies it. Is there a way to catch these bandits using gps and the internet connection?

Get your Phone Provider to block the imei number, it’s what they should do if the phone was reported stolen….

Your provider is probably correct: they might be connecting through a wan connection mr through a different service provider or contract. However because you installed fring on the handset it is connecting to your accounts.
You need to involve the police who can track down the IP address they are connected to, and then their ISP and MSP and then track them via the phone location/number.

Unfortunatly this doesnt help now that the handset has been stolen, however if Gsync had been installed and set to automaticlly backup any sms with your Gmail account then you would very quickly receive the mobile number of the thief.
This could then be handed over to police to track down the culprit.
The best outcome would be for the thief to actually send an SMS saying “hey dude i just stole this sweet fone”!!
Sprung with a confession!

Track the location of your N95 via GPS

Hi dude, your service provider will be able to tell what cell site your phone is being used near, this can help pinpoint the location. They just have to check some details on the network monitoring system they use and it will id the cell site ( these only have a coverage area of up to 8km in open country and much shorter in built up towns & cities) that and the imei will help police if they bother to help you. other than that get it barred by your service provider, once you called them to suspend your account they should have disabled the handset. good luck

If you were robbed by gunpoint, the police will have no trouble getting the pinpointed (and very precise) location of the phone you own from the mobile operator. This is used alot here in Denmark by the police, in crime solving, as this location data is stored by the providers for an amount of time.
I wouldnt go get the phone myself, but let the police handle it, as the perpetrator (if its the thief holding the phone still) will no doubt not hesitate to wave his gun again.

Well, my cell phone operator (COMCEL from Colombia) was not cooperative. They said they needed a court order to track the phone. The police always gave me the run around when I asked about the court order. I have now installed the 3dtracking software on my replacement phone, but I must say that it doesn’t always work.

Juan
I am from venezuela and understand what you are going through the police wont help you out because they think they have better things to do than track down cell phones and Comcel wants you to buy another phone anyways. If you do buy another n95 i know there is software that if it is installed and your phone is stolen you simple send an sms to t and it will lock the phone rendering it useless. also keep a copy of your imei number and other serials so you can report it to the operator and have the imei barred.
