New firmware is out V 11.0.026

Firmware, N95 17 Comments »

Disclaimer: MyN95 takes no responsibility for you updating your phone’s firmware or backing up your data.
If you make a brick out of your N95 we can’t help you.

First thing is you need to grab the Nokia Software Updater if you don’t already have it.
You can find it at http://www.nokia.com/A4176110 this website.

Next step is to completely backup your phone data.

Third step is to run the updater. It’s a big file, don’t try it via a modem. (109Mb)

If you aren’t confident managing this process see the disclaimer at the top of this tip.

After flashing my phone now shows:
V 11.0.026

RM-159

Getting rid of the ‘shortcuts’ on your desktop

N95, Tips 7 Comments »

You know the series of shortcut icons at the top of the screen on your N95, you can basically switch them all off quite easily.
Just use the following menu options:
Tools
– Settings
– General
– Personalisation
– Standy Mode
– Active Standby

Toggle that value and it will turn the shortcuts on or off.

Official Nokia N95 UK Website

General, N95 No Comments »

Check out http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4366148. Its the primary UK website for the N95. It has demos, downloadable software drivers, manuals and general info on the phone. There is a fair amount of downloadable material on this site!

It is worth keeping an eye on this site over time as software updates (firmware?) will no doubt be posted here as well.

GPS Map Data Location

I’ve seen a lot of people ask where the GPS data is located on the microSD card (or phone memory).
The directory which contains the maps is \Private\20001f63

Keyboard shortcuts

N95, Tips 2 Comments »

Goto the applications menu. Do you notice how it’s in a 3×4 matrix? Look at your keypad, also a 3×4 matrix.
You can use the corresponding numbers/buttons on your keypad to single keystroke select the items from the applications menu.

So 1 corresponds to Logs, 2 corresponds to Messages etc.

Copy and Paste text

N95, Tips 3 Comments »

Frustrated by a lack of text editing on your N95?
Well it’s easier than it seems, check this handy hint.
You can copy and paste text using the ‘pencil’ key on the navigation keypad.

To make it work, hold down the pencil key when you are typing a message. Then use the navigation arrows keys to highlight
the section you want to copy. From there use the options for copy and paste when they appear.

Turn your ‘ringer’ off with one keystroke

N95, Tips 8 Comments »

Sometimes you might be headed for a meeting and you need to quickly get the phone into silent mode.
Easiest way to do it with your N95 is to hold down the ‘#’ key (also known as the pound key).

Holding it down for a few seconds will toggle between silent mode and general mode.
Note: There have been some reports this does not work with all N95 handsets

Microphone not working during a call?

Bugs, N95 18 Comments »

Saw this and thought it might be useful.

I’ve seen a few people post on forums to say their microphone appears to be dead when making a call.
A temporary fix until new firmware is released is to turn on the loudspeaker and then switch back
to microphone mode.

This seems to give the phone the kick it needs to get the mic functional.
Currently the problem seems to be isolated to the 10.0.0.18 firmware.

Let me know if this works or doesn’t work for you, especially those of you suffering mic problems.

Phone behaving sluggishly or out of memory?

Check to see how many applications you might have inadvertantly left open.
To do this hold down the Menu Key
for a couple of seconds and you will get a popup list telling you what apps are running.

It’s often very easy to overlook these background running apps.

Saving battery power in WiFi mode

N95, WiFi 3 Comments »

The N95 initially comes with its WiFi power set to a whopping 100mW.
That is going to chew some serious battery power if you use WiFi mode extensively.

Why not give this a try and set your WiFi power to 10mW

Tools – Settings – Connection – Wireless Lan – Options – Change – Yes – Options – Advanced Settings – Yes
Then scroll down to Tx power level and select 10 mW

GPS activation

Applications, GPS, N95 5 Comments »

This might sound really really obvious, but the first time you fire up the GPS in your N95, be sure to stand in a space that is as open as possible. No huge tree’s or office buildings/towers in the way.

I did this and on my first try the GPS synced up in less than 30 seconds.
Since that time it has been able to sync within 10-15 seconds.

So find an open space and enjoy your maps!
