I think the hiss and the power buzz are two different problems: turning off the keypad tones definitely turns off the hiss too, but I think this is a general problem with the phone’s audio system, because when I listen to a song the hiss is clearly perceptible: definitely not a good phone from this point of view.

Ahhhh .. same problem here, got it on sunday but send it back on monday for the wobbly slider, the slider was fixed but when i tried the phone at the shop i noticed the hissing .. wtf ! this phone costs a hike and these problems make it worst .. is there any “other” fix apart from the silent keypad option ? i hope when i get the phone back after ” 7 working f**ing days ” i dont get the hiss sound any more .. how can nokia ignore this ..

Turning off the keypad tones didn’t help, and I can still hear it when the screen is in standby, too. Unfortunately, the better quality earphones you use, the more noticeable it is. The cheapies that ship with the N95 don’t reproduce the hiss nearly as well as the better ones that I normally use.

I have had 4 N95′s!!! All my phones have had the same buzzing/hissing sound! I am so frustrated with Nokia! I am currently waiting for another handset, the guy at Telstra was telling me that they have new stock shipping with the latest software and are now packaged in a different box. I am hoping that they have fixed the problem in this new batch. I have noticed that the hiss sound gets worse when talking, like feedback coming from the screen, the sound is there when the other person is talking but when you talk it amplifies the sound to another degree!!

The hissing sound comes from a switching power supply that powers the LCD screen. Notice that when in stand-by the noise a gone. Its a hardware problems, I assume that the noise will never go away unless Nokia can change the frequecy controller or a recall.

Hi,

My N95 has that hiss but not all the time and sometimes worse than others. (I have keypad tones turned off) I think it’s more of a hi-frequency twitter but whatev. Some of the people I ask to listen to it can hear it and some can’t. I’ve only had my phone for 2 weeks so I’m still in time to exchange it. Do you think it would be worth bothering trying to exchange it or do you think it’s a N95 thing and likely to occur on a new handset as well?

NO wobbly slider here either. My only complains with the N95 when I got it was the camera takes to long ot fire up and the streaming music only plays real audio, which I fixed.

No hiss in mine either. But then again I don’t have a wobbly slider either. Perhaps it’s all tied together.

None in my N95. Very strange how some have it and others don’t. Either that or I am tone deaf at the same audio frequency the hiss is.

Yeah i would have to agree that this is not good enough from Nokia’s side of things.

I have returned my handset once already as the hissing was ear splitting and i couldn’t handle it. The replacement handset still does it but not as badly as my old one.

Not really sure if i want to go through the problem of being without a phone for another 3-4 days while i wait for another one.

The sound appears to be emitted by the LCD screen similar to an old TV or CRT. I find if I hold the screen down it seems to dampen the sound but not eliminate it ;P

I just purchased my N95 today and there is a definite hiss in the earphones. Hopefully Nokia will be able to do something about this soon – it really isn’t good enough IMO.

Yep, unfortunately the annoying sound is still there. I thought it was my earpiece gone bad, but since others out there are having the same issue, bad earpiece can be ruled out.

I always hate about the keypad tones.
I always turn the keypad tones off on all my handset including N95 and the hissing is still there
