New online store for fans of Arduino

N95 No Comments »

Hi All,
I’ve opened a new site recently, so just promoting it here.

If you are into Arduino, LED’s, RGB LED’s, LED Drivers, Protoyping, look no further than

www.mirozap.com

What does this have to do with the N95? Not a lot. :-)
It’s an experiment to see if linking here will get me more hits on my new site.

How to speed-up GPS connectivity

N95 6 Comments »

I know that so many people complain about how slow NOKIA devices are when it comes to GPS connection.

These tips I brought to you will help increase the connectivity speed that it will most likly take about 10 to 30 second at maximum instead of the old-fashioned 5 to 10 minuts we all know.

1\Open the keyboard (slider).

2\Go to: menu/tools/settings/general/positioning/positioning methods. Be sure that “Assisted GPS”, “Integrated GPS” and “Network based” are marked.

Then go back to “positioning” options and select “positioning server”. As an access point, choose the internet access point (note that WLAN and WAP wont do the trick). And the server address should be “suple.nokia.com”. If not, insert it manually.

Note: this will cost you a little due to data transferal (about 8 kbs only). Later, you can remove these options.

3\ Put your phone in an open area or as close as possible to a window with the keyboard slider open (direct the keyboard outside the window) because the GPS chip is under the keyboard (smart design from NOKIA).

4\Launch the mapping app you’re using (Google maps, Garmin mobile XT, NOKIA maps..etc) and leave it until there is a GPS connection.

5\Connect the battery charger and leave the mobile like this for 4 hours maximum.

Like this, your GPS device’s location (which is your phone) will be recognized by the GPS sattilite at once. Making it connect alot faster than before.

Now you can return the positioning settings back although leaving them will make it even faster. But remember that every time you need to use the GPS, you have to slide-open the keyboard for fast connecting.

Garmin Mobile XT V5

I know that lots of people (like me) have no idea about roads. That’s why I brought this app to you. It’ll help you while traveling and it’ll save the embarrassment of asking people about how to go to from a place to an other.

This app is easy to use, with a highly detailed maps and supported with sound directing.

Here is the link: http://rapidshare.com/files/237527047/Garmin_Mobile_XT_v5.rar

Note: I didn’t include the maps with this pack so please google for them. They are so big in size which will make it hard to download. Especially if you wont be using most of these maps.

N95 Line Busy Bug?

N95 6 Comments »

Hi all,

Ever now and then, when I dial somebody and the line is busy, I hang up, but the “Line Busy” screen stays for a few seconds, as if it’s locked up.

Does anyone else have this? I’ve heard it affects the N95-8GB also.

Using firmware V 31.0.017.

A slight change to myn95.com format

General, N95 4 Comments »

Hi folks,
I’ve decided to make a slight change to the way myn95.com operates.
As I now enter my 2nd year of ownership there are a lot less in the way of hints and tips for the N95 surfacing. This is to be expected after the 2nd year of the products life.

Recently you’ll have noticed I’ve posted a couple of users pleas for help to the blog. I figure its a good time for me to edit and post some of these requests for help. The community here is extremely knowledgeable and if we can help a few others out along the way, all the better. Now I know a few of you have been regular contributors to peoples requests and I am sure its very appreciated.

I’ll still be moderating each and every post to keep any noise to a minimum.

N95 8GB only show 995 mb of built in memory instead of 8GB

Another please for some help with the N95.
I am sure this regular reader would appreciate any feedback on this.
My initial thought would be are you reading the memory off of a memory card plugged into the side slot rather than the base memory of the unit?

Updating Your N95 Firmware

Firmware, General, N95, Tips 9 Comments »

Greetings everyone!

I had some problems like a lot of people while trying to update my N95 to v30 firmware, because even when we know it’s already available for download, Nokia Updater keeps saying we are with the latest firmware.

So, as isawan95 said in New N95-1 Firmware Available v30.0.015, some providers customize the firmware before sell the phone.

This way, they change your Product Code to one that, for Nokia, will be forever firmware vxx.xx. In my case, v21.0.016.

So, i’ve found a tutorial explaining how to change your product code easily. I’ve translated since was in Portuguese-br.

TUTORIAL

Disclaimer: The informations described in this tutorial are intermediary-advanced and, if made anything wrong, you can damage or even ‘kill’ your phone. I suggest you follow these steps ONLY IF YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE of what you are doing.

In any way, MyN95 admins or RaphaelDDL are guilty to whatever happens to our phone if YOU did something wrong or anything. We did NOT forced you to do :P

So, let’s get started.

1 ) Install Nokia PC Suite or NSeries PC Suite, connect your phone with the USB cable in Pc Suite Mode and make sure it was detected and working perfectly. Normally, one of those softwares comes in the CD-Rom that came in the phone box. I recommend you to update its version to the latest and, i like more NSeries PC Suite, but you choose :P

2 ) Download the following softwares:

* Nemesis Service Suite ( My Mirror at DepositFiles )
* Nokia Software Updater ( I can’t mirror since website detects the language and you will download an specific language exe)

3 ) Install Nemesis Service Suite without changing anything and PAY ATTENTION at the ending of installation where it will show you a tutorial explaining how install the necessary driver. Then:

* Open the program and click in the “Scan for New Device” button, in the upper-right.
* Click in “Phone Info”
* Clique in “Read” and, with other info, will show you your current Product Code.

4 ) ATTENTION, this step is very important!!!

In this point, the original and blocked “Product Code” of your phone will be replaced to one update able. The following list show you some “Product Codes” that allow you to update your firmware, both to N95-1 (EURO) and N95-3 (NAM). Pick the one accordingly to your phone type!

N95-1
#0548763
#0546222
#0549028

N95-3
#0552432
#0552434

Question: What type is my phone?
Answer: N95-1 have Lens Protector while N95-3 don’t. Look the damn photos :D

N95-1

N95-1

N95-3

N95-3

5 ) Type the chosen Product Code in the form, check the “Enable” checkbox and click in the “Write” button. That’s it, the Product Code of your phone has been replaced. Check if everything worked fine by clicking in “Read” again. Now will be shown the new Product Code.

6 ) Nokia PC Suite and NSeries PC Suite have the Backup option. I ask.. No, i DEMAND YOU to backup the phone!

6.1 ) MAKE SURE your phone have Full Battery.

I suggest you to make the updating in a GOOD Notebook because if Energy drop and your pc turn off or pc freeze ’cause your pc sucks or anything, say good bye to your phone and be sure you got some cash in bank to buy other one :D

7 ) Simply update your firmware using Nokia Software Updater, following the things the program ask you.

8 ) Its Ready! Your phone is now updating and unbloked!

…Hey, wait!?! Where are my Contacts, my Configs, everything!?!!?

Yeah, updating firmware is like formatting your PC. That’s why i told you to make backup! Simply use Nokia/NSeries PC Suite and restore it.

9 ) Re-install your applications.

10 ) Future Firmware updates does not need this big tutorial, you will just need to start from Step #7.

And that’s it, our tutorial is over.

Speed camera addition to nokia maps

Applications, GPS, N95 1 Comment »

Might be of some use for UK residents, not sure if the £19 compares well to other potential applications. web site also looks a tad basic, so be aware of what you might potentially be signing up for.

http://mcbiskits1.googlepages.com/ this tells you how to add the speed camera app to your n95, its a bit drawn out having to have symbian sign each bit of software, but It works fine, you can upload a 2005 database for free, but to get the latest upto date camera locations its £19 a year subscription.

3G iPhone Hints and Tips site launched!

N95 8 Comments »

Many of you may be giving up your beloved N95′s to move to the Apple iPhone.
Rest assured we will be there to help you with our usual range of hints and tips.
Just head on over to my3G-iPhone.com for all the latest news, hints and tips.

The site currently uses a very similar template, which I’ll update over the next couple of days, then again why change a winning formula!

I won’t however be changing over to an iPhone at this stage, I’m keeping myN95 because I can’t live without certain features which aren’t yet available for iPhone. Things like MMS and using myN95 as a bluetooth modem. Hopefully iPhone will overcome these limitations in the future. Of course my wife is very interested in getting an iPhone for her birthday later this month, so we will have at least one in the family!

Even though I canceled my account, my stolen n95 (at gunpoint) is still logging in to the internet through a software i installed called fring. Its logging in to my msn chat. It seems the thiefs dont know about this. I had purchased an unlimited internet plan which seems to be running though my provider denies it. Is there a way to catch these bandits using gps and the internet connection?

N95 Codes

N95, Tips 16 Comments »

Please apply these codes at your own risk! If you are not completely crazyand use them appropriately, they can indeed come in quite handy one day!

*#06# – IMEI (serial number).
Structure of the IMEI:XXXXXX (TAC) XX (FAC) XXXXXX (SNR) X (SP)
TAC = type approval code
FAC = final assembly code
SNR = serial number
SP = spare

*#0000# – phone model, firmware version and date

*#7370# or *#res0# – full phone format, wipes everything clean. default security code 12345 until changed by the user

*#7780# – phone reset, clears settings without deleting most data. default security code 12345 until changed by the user

*#7370925538# or *#res0wallet# – deletes everything in the wallet, in case of lost password

*#92702689# or *#war0anty# – lifetime timer

*#2820# or *#bta0# – displays the N95′s bluetooth MAC address

*#62209526# or *#mac0wlan# – displays the N95′s WLAN MAC address

[Green]+[def3]+[*+] – fail-safe reformat, use this as a last resort if the regular format codes do not work or if the phone won’t completely boot normally

Firmware, N95 62 Comments »

This firmware is now available via the Nokia Software Updater.
It might not be in place for all regions just yet, I’ll be trying mine tonight or tomorrow so I’ll report back then.

Most interesting features for this release are:
# Flash Lite 3 is included, so Flash video sites will work, including YouTube (just as on the N95 8GB v15 firmware from a couple of months ago)
# The Web runtime is included, meaning that standalone widgets are now possible
# Greater Bluetooth headset compatibility
# Better handling of entering lots of text into web page dialogs
# Speedier Gallery in every way
# Faster Java runtime, so Java apps start faster

Zyb, social networking comes to your mobile

General, N95 3 Comments »

I’m generally not a big fan of social networking websites. I don’t use facebook or myspace and probably never will.
I saw this website mentioned in a comment that someone left here at MyN95 and figured it might have some value.
The one benefit this site appears to have is it will allow you to backup the contents of your phone. This might make
life easier when it comes time to try and restore your data to another phone. Perhaps after a firmware update.

Now I haven’t registered and tried this site or its features, but I figured there are enough of you out there that might
want to give it a go. As usual leave any feedback in the comments section.

The definitive guide for signing your own applications

Applications, General, N95 15 Comments »

Hi everyone,
I’ve seen quite a few comments recently on people struggling with ‘beta’ apps and not being able to sign the application.
Here is a guide I found today which step by step shows you exactly what is needed to sign your own apps.
I haven’t tested it myself yet, but I will over the next couple of days.
In the meantime, anyone else that has the time, give it a go and see what you can find out.

Bear in mind it may cost you a few dollars to get your own certificate, however once you have it you’ll be able to sign any of those unsigned applications that you have laying around.

You can view the guide at this website http://n95-nokia-phone.blogspot.com/2007/09/advanced-and-inquisitive-symbian.html

Accelerometer Apps| Ink Cartridge

Acelerometer, Applications, N95, Tips 23 Comments »

I only discovered a few days ago (thanks to this blog) that my N95 had an accelerometer in it. I tell ya I was on a high all day! Since then I’ve found an assortment of little apps to show off this little nifty feature! If you’re like me and behind on the news, an accelerometer is a little chip inside the phone (similar to the iPhone & Nintendo Wii) that allows you to control apps via movement of the N95. Nokia put it in there so that it could determine whether a photo was taken in Landscape or Portrait. I’m actually suprised that they didn’t develop and market this feature in the release of the N95.

NOTE: All these apps are suitable for the N95 and the N95 8Gb.

NOTE 2: Some of these apps need signing. Follow this great guide to sign your own apps.

You can print this guide, as well. For best results, be sure your ink cartridge is full.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE INSTALLED THE N95 ACCELEROMETER PLUGIN FIRST! Click Here to get it!

rotateMe v2.0 as mentioned on this site allows you to rotate the screen with the tilt movement of the phone. Just like the iPhone you can rotate your screen into landscape to view photos full screen.

Nokmote (from the same developer as rotateME) allows you to make selections on your N95 with hand gestures. Replaces your directional pad in every application including games. Change song selections with a shake just like the SE W910. Also available at Nokia MOSH

Moving Ball is a little app which I think was designed by the Nokia crew to demonstrate the accelerometer in the N95.

Light Saber – Turn your N95 into a Light Sabre. Makes the genuine sounds according to the movement of your phone. Includes impact sounds as well. Fight as a Jedi (Green) or on the Dark Side (Red). 5/5 for fun!

Inclinometer gives you a visual of the angle your phone is on. Is designed so you can see the angle of your car when 4-Wheel driving. *This version lacks calibration to compensate for holding the phone upright or mounting in phone holder*

Accelerinvaders is Space Invaders on your phone controlled by the accelerometer. This is the latest version which allows you to put the phone into landscape and play, as well as using phone vibration to enhance gaming experience.

Beta Youtube app for S60 phones

Applications, N95 4 Comments »

**Note**
This software is somewhat restricted at this point in time. It only allows you to do a search for a single word.
Multiple keywords are not supported. That seriously restricts its usefulness. As a novelty app however its fine.

Wow! Software developer Samir has just released a Beta version of full youtube player. Although this is in beta, it really shows us a glimpse of things to come. Download the youtube player YTPlayer. Please note that it is still in beta!

Please note that you will need to install Adobe flash lite player 3. This version of flash lite is also only a developer edition and is not intended as replacement for the current flash player provided with the phone.

The file is in .swf format and it should be run from with in Adobe flash lite 3 and make sure you copy the file to either c:/data/other or e:/other

Received an email to my hotmail account today.
The direct link inside the email was broken, however this one http://mobilecentral.ninemsn.com.au/msggo.aspx took
me to a page where I could use MSN messenger for my N95.

Depending on the N95 browser you are using the image on that first screen may not display correctly.
I zoomed out to 50% and entered my phone number that way.
(You can also enter this address into your desktop browser on your pc which should eliminate any viewing problems)

The sms I received provided me with this link http://m.ninemsn.com.au/msg/?pn=xxxxxxxxxx
where xxxxxxxxxx was my phone number. So manually entering that may also work.
You may also need a windows live id or hotmail address to download this application.

Anyone without MSN Messenger already on their phone want to give it a try and report back if it works?
It may be just restricted to mobiles on the aussie phone network. See if it works for you.

IPhone vs N95 (auto-rotate screen)

Applications, N95, Tips 32 Comments »

As we all know and see there are many forums which compare the nokia N95 to Apple’s IPhone. Feature comparison etc etc etc… Well, there is one feature that the IPhone has which I very much like: screen auto-rotate. If you switch the phone to landscape, the screen auto-rotates to landscape and when turned back to portrait, the screen will display in portrait mode.

This week a colleague of mine (he was very proud to tell me he has bought the 8GB N95 *jealous-mode*) told me he has found an article of an application that auto-rotates the screen of a N95! I was very surprised because I did not know the N95 has level-sensor hardware. Officially the application will be available at the end of this month but for those who can’t wait… Make a donation and you will get the beta version of RotateMe v2.0 Guys believe me, I have this app on my phone: I love it :-)

Using Quicktime Pro for HQ movie conversions

Applications, N95 4 Comments »

for N95 of course!

I think there are freeware out there but Quicktime Pro is simply awesome! (I’m a Mac fan)
Exporting to MP4 AVC/H.264 doesn’t work well with N95 but here’s a tip, 3GP is a container format which allows MP4 AVC, awesome quality for a small file, and N95 reads it with no problems.

Open movie with Quicktime Pro,
File > Export
Movie to 3G > Options

Video Settings:
Video Format: H.264
Data Rate: 512kbits/s (Play around with settings for your preferable quality, 512 is perfect for myself)
Image Size: 320×240 (Tick preserve aspect ratio and use letterbox, you can use crop if you don’t mind a cropped image for movies)
Frame Rate: Current
Keyframe: Automatic

Audio:
Audio Format: AAC-LC (Music)
Data Rate: 128kbps (same as video, play around with the settings)
Channels: Stereo
Output Sample Rate: 44.1kHz

That’s all. If anyone has a better converter for H.264/AVC codec, please share.

Data Usage Counter

Applications, N95, Tips 4 Comments »

Before my N95 I was a PocketPC Phone Edition user and using the internet on your PocketPC meant big bills if you didn’t watch your data usage. So the only way to do this was with a third-party “Data Usage Meter”. So naturally I went looking for one when I got my N95, but I couldn’t find one…only to discover that it comes with the phone in the “Log” application!

To get there: Menu> Applications> Log> Packet Data

Once there you can clear the Log (with a lock code…which by default is 12345 unless you’ve changed it!) or set the log to clear itself every 1, 10 or 30 days.

OSX – Scheduled Syncing

Applications, N95 1 Comment »

I have found the app to Sync at set intervals.

It’s called SyncBar, and you can find it Here

Enjoy :)

OSX Auto Sync when entering Bluetooth range

Applications, N95, Tips No Comments »

I have discovered a great “out of the box” way to auto-sync when entering your Bluetooth Network. I have tested this and it’s working great, syncing my Entourage Calendar when I come within Bluetooth range of my MacBook. (See my post below if you need to Sync with Entourage)

Two simple steps:
1. Download this: AutoSync

2. Install Home Zone: Get it Here
An awesome little app which will allow much more then simply Auto Syncing. “Available actions include enabling or disabling the screen saver password, switching network locations, setting the system volume, locking all keychains or opening any file, application or URL.”

Once installed, Set Home Zone to run AutoSync when entering range. Don’t be confused either by the Sync option in the dropdown, that didn’t seem to work for me, but once I pointed it to the AutoSync script, everything worked fine.

Now, I’d like to say I scoured the net to discover these gems, however, after some slight googling, I came upon someones site who had actually done all the work and written much more on the topic. So for more details on the above, and some other useful tips check out:

Navigation Upgrade Not Supported in NZ

Applications, GPS, N95 8 Comments »

Admin Note:
I normally don’t publish articles that are posted here that read more like forum posts, but Craig has a valid concern and possibly the community of N95 users out there might be able to offer some advice.

Nokia did not release the navigation upgrade for the New Zealand region. Which is very frustrating. I am using MGMaps at the moment (Google maps linked to the GPS receiver) but this does NOT allow for journey planning or voice navigation. I am currently looking for a cheap or free alternative software package to use as a substitute.

Anyone have a similar problem, or have a solution? I am in contact with the Nokia rep here in NZ, and there doesn’t seem be a fix coming for us. I know four other N95 users in my city who share my frustrations.

N95 and your Mac

General, N95, Tips 11 Comments »

Nokia’s support for the MAC platform has traditionally been pretty weak. However, with the release of the iPhone, we are seeing some good things from Nokia to counter the iPhones dominance. Here is a collection of stuff to make your N95 and your Mac work together:

Nokia MultiMedia Transfer: Transfer pictures, videos, music, and more between your compatible Nokia device and Mac. Integrates audio with iTunes and pictures with iPhoto. You can also set your N95 to be recognized as a Camera. One of the coolest features however is transfering you photos to iPhoto, and have iPhoto transfer back optimized versions of your photos to your phone, keeping more space available.
http://europe.nokia.com/A4423134

Nokia N95 iSync Plugin: Sync your iCal Calendar and Address Book with your phone. Also supports Entourage, however, to get this support you must sync Entourage with .Mac. This will enable Entourage to use iSync to transfer data to your phone.

In Entourage: Preferences > Sync Services > Check all that apply.

Auto Sync: Julian Schrader has created this lite app which will open iSync, Sync, and then close iSync. Works well. there is also some discussion on his blog around automatically running this app when your phone enters the Bluetooth range of your Mac. Very handy, however I have not tested as there are two scripts to make this happen and I don’t much about combining these scripts. Perhaps a reader here can compile the scripts into a nice little pack for the rest of us.

Julian states he uses a third party app to get this functionality, called “BluePhoneElite”. You need BluePhoneElite II for the N95, but it is currently Beta, requires a purchased unlock code, and N95 support is not fully functioning yet. Keep an eye out though as the feature set, once complete for the N95, is quite robust.

More Maps: I believe this is the default app on the N95, but if you don’t have it one your phone, get it here.Load all the maps you want, and you can upgrade to the Navigational Aid.

No ringtones?

General, N95, Tips 7 Comments »

Hi! First post here, but hopefully a useful one. I’ve had a nightmare trying to change my ringtone – or more specifically my alarm tone but experienced the same problem with any profile and anything requiring a tone – ever since the first time setup, I seemed to have no tones in the phone – it showed the message “opening” and then, when it finished, the only options presented to me were to Download Sounds or switch the tones “Off”. I sent the phone away, it came back just the same. I downloaded some tones, it still didn’t find them and wouldn’t let me change my ringtone.

Then I took the microSD card out so I could send the phone back for replacement, thought I’d give it one more try – and it worked!

So, if you want to change your ringtone & the phone won’t let you, it seems the solution is to take out the SD memory card, change it, then pop it back in.

Moving your Nokia Maps or smart2go subscription

GPS, N95 No Comments »

I bought the navigation upgrade for my N91 a few months ago and have now upgraded to an N95. The info below is relevant to anyone changing handset after they’ve bought a Nokia Maps smart2go or navigation upgrade

I had some difficulty finding out how to move the license between handsets as it’s tied to IMEI.

All you need to do is email Openbit support (Openbit are the payment/licensing service that the maps application uses) at support@openbit.com, explain to them that you’ve bought a new phone and want to “release your license”.

After they’ve made this change you’ll be able to upgrade the new handset by going through the purchase upgrade steps and entering your license code.

Not too sure on the list of improvements at this stage, so if you have any info feel free to attach a comment to this article.

After successful firmware update the details are:

N95 Audio Hiss Fix

N95, Tips 17 Comments »

Hi there,

Ive been chatting to some people who have been having hissing issues through their headset when using their N95′s. I was confused as ALOT of people complained of this, yet my phone didnt seem to have the problem.

After some thinking, a lightbulb went off in my head and I realised that I had turned Keypad tones off, as I dont like my phone to beep each time I touch it. Sure enough, when I turned my keypad tones to any level above OFF, the phone would hiss in my ears.

So just a heads up, that this MAY be a fix for the hissing coming from peoples phones. Turn your keypad tones off!

New Nokia Firmware releasing soon!

Firmware, N95 1 Comment »

**Update** It should be noted that this is NOT an official release. Thus, when it IS officially released to the public, it could have a different number and different Maps software, etc.**Update**Seems everything’s getting a nice little refresh lately, with the N73 and N80, and now I’ve gotten these screenshots showing the N95 with a fresh firmware (dated yesterday, no less!) I didn’t get an official changelog (what’s up with those NEVER being available?) but I did get these three screenshots. The first shows that the firmware is dated yestday, 6-19-2007, and is numbered v12.0.013.

Frankly, there’s not *too* many changes that I’ve come across. Available RAM after a fresh boot is still ~18MB. I did check for FOTA, and it’s not there, unfortunately. However, the new version of Nokia Maps is in there, as you can see from this screenshot. This also adds the ability of Assisted-GPS, which uses cell ID’s and their known location to help speed up the process of locking into a location. which uses the device’s data connection to talk to a server that helps it process the locations being sent from the satellite, resulting in a quicker and more efficient location lock.

With A-GPS disabled, it took the N95 a full 74 seconds to lock-on. With A-GPS enabled (and after a power cycle with battery removal), it was only 57 seconds. That’s a 17 second speed boost, and because A-GPS is a learning system that keeps track of known cell-IDs, it will get continually faster. Also, with A-GPS, I was able to get a location lock INDOORS! I tested this by walking from one end of the house to the other, and it followed me on the screen. Freakin SWEET.

The product code for this update is 0536062.

Will be playing more, if there’s anything else that you’d like to know about this new firmware (other than when it will officially be released, cause I don’t know that) then leave it in the comments

Multimedia Key Failure Temp fix

N95, Tips 3 Comments »

This may or may not help everyone, I can only vouch for my own experience.

After reading the article I was feeling kind of let down, as I use my phone for my morning alarm. It was a choice – get to work on time or have the neat multimedia key. So I bit the bullet and set the alarm. I decided to try the MM key, it was broken… I could have cried.

Then, one day while showing my neat new phone to a friend, I decided to slide it for the landscape view – just to show how cool the phone is. Low and behold, next time I tried to use the MM key, it worked. I don’t know if this will work for everyone, but the MM key works and so does my recurrent alarm.

New Nokia Maploader released.

Applications, GPS, N95 4 Comments »

NOTE: Before you race off to install this, a few people have reported issues with the new mapping software on the N95.
The issues seem to revolve around the way in which routing is handled, it appears with the new version you lose some functionality. Peharps someone that has tried this can post a comment and let us know what the issues actually are.

It looks as though Smart 2 Go have released an updated version of Map Loader. And this update isn’t just a quick useless update. It is a nice jump forward.

With the main improvements being the downloading and installing speeds of the maps (down to about 10minutes for Australian Maps now).

And the option to download the voices through Map Loader.

There is also a new Smart 2 Go Map’s Application being released for the N95 in the coming weeks with the following fixes:

Here are some of the updates you can look forward too:

  • Navigation Trial: 3-day free Navigation trial
Giving you a chance to try out the voice navigation features before upgrading.
  • New indicators: GPS status, bandwidth indicators
Giving you more information and allowing you to keep track of the data being used by the application.
  • Map improvements: Colouring, details, horizon, country borders & time zones
  • Unified search: All search methods in one menu & intuitive search interaction
  • Improved category search: Multi-level search (Eat + Drink -> Restaurants -> Thai)
  • Faster navigation start: Starts before full route calculated, starts without GPS fix.
  • Faster MapLoader: Download speed improved significantly and voice command download
A very welcome update which should hopefully improve the multi hour download times.
  • New regions: India and Indonesia plus better coverage in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore (in total more than 100 countries/over 50 navigable)

Multimedia key not working

Bugs, N95, Tips 5 Comments »

If the multimedia key on your N95 has stopped working, you can fix it by doing a simple restart of the phone. Failing this, a hard reset should definitely do the trick.

One reason for this happening is a bug in the clock application, specifically with the recurring alarm. If you set a recurring alarm, once it has activated, the key will no longer be working.

There is also speculation that using photographs taken by the user with the N95 as the background in the multimedia menu, then deleting them, also triggers the bug, but this is yet to be proven. Further comment would be appreciated.

N95 GPS tips from Nokia support

GPS, N95 56 Comments »

***************
In N95 the GPS receiver is located in the bottom of the device, below the numeric keyboard. When using the receiver, slide the numeric keypad open
and hold the device upright in your hand at an angle of about 45 degrees, with a clear view of the sky. Make sure, that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver.
Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes. Establishing a GPS connection in the car may take longer.

If your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider the following:
- If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal.
- If the numeric keypad slide is closed, open it.
- If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.
- Check that your hand does not cover the GPS receiver of your device.
- If the weather conditions are bad, in such a case the signal strength may also be affected.
- Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to several minutes.
- Avoid to use screen saver when GPS connection is establishing.

NOTE: The GPS receiver takes its power from the battery. Using the GPS receiver may drain the battery faster.

Regards,

I received an email from ‘raz’ this morning about some camera problems with the N95.
This post contains some links to discussion on the issue.
The issue revolves around the rear (5megapixel) camera and that it stops functioning after a period of time.
The front camera remains unaffected.
Interestingly for me, my first N95 had a dead camera when I picked it up. Luckily I was able to exchange
the phone on the next day and I’ve had no problems since.

Some further reading on the problem can be found here:

Play Non Real Media streams on your N95

Applications, N95 10 Comments »

I was dissapointed to find out that the N95 only does real media streaming radio stations, specially when most internet radio stations are MP3 based. But I found this link to an open source app for the N95 which plays mp3 streams as well as shoutcast.

You can get it here: http://opensource.nokia.com/projects/s60internetradio/ClientPage.html
To add stations to the shoutcast type playlist you have to put each stations IP address instead of DNS address, but this is not a hassle if you do a DNS look up on the net.

Follow the instructions and you should be listening ot other stations on your N95. I had stations that my ISP provides for free running over wireless in about 10 minutes.

Unable to play MP3′s or any music files

Applications, N95 4 Comments »

Some people have reported problems with a corrupted music folder that wont play sounds/music files. There is a solution and it involves tracking down the \Private\100012a5 on the memory card. The file causing all the problems is named something like DBS_101FE031_mcv7.mpd

The simple solution here is to delete the entire \Private\100012a5 folder. You could try just deleting the offending index file, but no guarantee’s as to how that will work.

After you have deleted/removed, be sure to go into music player and refresh your music selection so it can rebuild the index.

Replace the version of search on your N95

Applications, N95 2 Comments »

There is an updated version of the search program available. The update allows you to also search content on your phone. This is pretty handy if you want to search your calendar or contacts list, email or pretty much any other content on your phone. I even use it to find song titles in my MP3/AAC collection.

Ok so what do you need to do?

  • First, as painful as it sounds, remove the old search program. (It’s version 2.020 or something, fear not the new version is in the 3.030 range)
  • Once thats done, go to the Downloads application and click on Search.
  • If you are on a nice data cap plan (3 xseries for example) just follow the prompts and accept the download + install
If for some reason search isn’t in the list, refresh the page, if you still can’t get it, then do the direct download.

  • If you don’t have a decent data cap (why do you have an N95 again?) then grab the file here save it on your PC then USB xfer it (or bluetooth) to your N95
  • Install the new Search program. Quite a few Continues and Ok’s to click on here
  • The install process might even tell you that you have Search still installed (didn’t we just delete it?). If it does just say yes you wish to overwrite the old one.
  • Search is installed into the Applications Folder, move it somewhere more friendly like the root folder

Now when you run Search you should see a new setting for My Content
Select it and search your phone for info!

Note: On my phone there seemed to be a few random services under the local section ike Swiss yellow pages and some other stuff. I noticed these were gone after I installed the new search program. If these local services are important to you, then perhaps its best not to install the new Search program, or perhaps try installing it without removing the original Search like I did.

Contact name not showing when your phone rings?

    General, N95 2 Comments »

There is a simple fix to this particular problem.
On the Nokia N95 (and other Nokia’s) when you have an identical contact in phone memory and also on the SIM card the phone isn’t able to successfully display the contact name when the phone rings.
Delete one of the contacts and you should get the display name back.

Note: Seems as though this article has been removed from the Nokia Forums, however I found another link on the 3G forums and this one has pictures!

A fix was posted for this on the Nokia forums, however it’s not really one for the faint hearted. Rather than follow the instructions given here, my preference would be to return the phone. However if you are feeling adventurous then read on and discover how to dismantle your N95 and wedge a piece of paper into the display to make it stop squealing.

How to fast forward or rewind in music player

    N95, Tips No Comments »

I had to refer to the manual for this one. I was listening to a podcast on my N95 and I had to stop it for a while. I came back to it later and thought hmmm how do I get 14 minutes into the track? The music player only shows the skip to the end or the beginning of track buttons.

The way to fast forward or rewind is just to hold the corresponding skip button down.
This works in both music player and real player.

How to repair a wobbly slider on your N95

I was given a heads up on this by a regular reader of myN95.com

It’s in Italian, but the instructions are still very easy to follow and give you a relatively easy option for fixing a loose, wobbly or flimsy slider on your phone.
The mod itself is non obtrusive, so you don’t have to rip your N95 apart.

Map searching now works without a network connection

    GPS, N95, Tips 10 Comments »

As part of the most recent firmware update V11.0.026,
you can now search for addresses without being connected to a network.
Just be sure to use a suburb/town name rather than a postcode.

This feature worked for some customers previously, however those of us in Australia always had to maintain an active network connection.

Note: You need to make sure you have the maps downloaded and saved to your memory card. On a new N95 there are some basic maps contained in phone memory. I would guess that these are non searchable. See the tip on downloading the latest maps.
Version number required is v3.0 w12 b02 (to find your version Maps – Options – About)

Tired of waiting for maps to download?

    Applications, GPS, N95 7 Comments »

    Then try this.

  • Insert memory card into the N95
  • Hard reset the phone <- Only do this if you don’t already have the maps software reading from the memory card
  • Run the Maps program and alllow it to create the directory structure on the memory card
  • Plug in a USB key and copy the directory structure (alternatively just copy \Private\20001f63) from the memory card
  • Unplug the N95 from the USB cable
  • Run Maploader again and you will have fooled the maploader into loading onto your USB Key

This should speed up your download speed significantly.

Once it’s done just copy the relevant directory (or structure) back to your memory card

Disclaimer: MyN95 takes no responsibility for you updating your phone’s firmware or backing up your data.
If you make a brick out of your N95 we can’t help you.

First thing is you need to grab the Nokia Software Updater if you don’t already have it.
You can find it at http://www.nokia.com/A4176110 this website.

Next step is to completely backup your phone data.

Third step is to run the updater. It’s a big file, don’t try it via a modem. (109Mb)

    – Active Standby

Toggle that value and it will turn the shortcuts on or off.

Microphone not working during a call?

    Bugs, N95 18 Comments »

Saw this and thought it might be useful.

I’ve seen a few people post on forums to say their microphone appears to be dead when making a call.
A temporary fix until new firmware is released is to turn on the loudspeaker and then switch back
    to microphone mode.

This seems to give the phone the kick it needs to get the mic functional.
Currently the problem seems to be isolated to the 10.0.0.18 firmware.

Let me know if this works or doesn’t work for you, especially those of you suffering mic problems.

This might sound really really obvious, but the first time you fire up the GPS in your N95, be sure to stand in a space that is as open as possible. No huge tree’s or office buildings/towers in the way.

I did this and on my first try the GPS synced up in less than 30 seconds.
Since that time it has been able to sync within 10-15 seconds.

So find an open space and enjoy your maps!
